Fall In The Rockies
A Sign Of Hope
The fall of 2020 was a profoundly devastating period for the iconic Rocky Mountain National Park. The fierce Cameron Peak and East Troublesome Fires wreaked unimaginable havoc on the park and the surrounding areas, tragically leading to the destruction of nearly 30,000 acres of beautiful land within the park. During this troubled time, the western entrance was closed for an extended period, leaving visitors yearning to reconnect with the natural wonders of the region. It wasn't until the fall of 2021 that I finally had the opportunity to return to that side of the park.
As I passed through the gate, the stark reality of the destruction was painfully evident. Charred trees, their skeletal remains bent over like silent sentinels, formed haunting arches along the road. These trees were left in this heartbreaking condition after the devastating fire, compounded by hurricane-force winds that swept through the area. It was a strange and sobering feeling to drive through that section, weighed down by emotions of loss and sadness. It was both emotional and frightening, a true testament to the power of nature's wrath and the devastation it can bring.
As I continued my journey deeper into the park, I was met with a stunning transformation, where the destroyed areas gradually gave way to vibrant patches of life. Nature, resilient as ever, was showing its strength and beauty with gorgeous aspen groves regrowing and climbing up the side of the mountain. Although the air was chilly, the brilliant colors of the trees managed to warm my spirits. After navigating through the path of destruction, I stumbled upon a golden prize of sorts. Although some of the landscape had changed forever, Mother Nature's beauty still managed to shine through, defying the odds.
This picture was taken not far from the burn scar, a vivid reminder of the journey I had witnessed. After passing through such a dark and depressing area, it felt essential to capture these incredible colors. I find myself enamored with the bright yellow aspen leaves, but I also appreciate the sight of the young, small trees bravely growing below them, symbolizing hope and renewal in the face of adversity.
