Fall In The Rockies

A Sign Of Hope

The fall of 2020 was devastating for Rocky Mountain National Park. The Cameron Peak and East Troublesome Fires wreaked havoc on the park and surrounding areas. Nearly 30,000 acres were destroyed in the park. The western entrance was closed for a long period of time. It was finally opened and guest were allowed to enter. It was fall of 2021 when I finally returned to that side of the park. After passing through the gate, you saw the destruction. Charred trees bent over making arches. These trees were left this way after the fire and hurricane force winds came through the area. It was a strange feeling driving through that section. Emotional. Frightening. Devastating.

I continued into the park. Destroyed areas suddenly changed into vibrant ones. There was life. Beautiful aspen groves were growing strong. Climbing up the side of the mountain. Although the air was chilly, the colors of the trees warmed you up. After going through the path of destruction, I found the golden prize. Although some of the landscape changed forever, mother nature's beauty still shined through.

This picture was taken not far from the burn scar. After passing through such a dark and depressing area, these colors needed to be captured. I love the bright yellow aspen leaves, but I also appreciate the young small trees growing below them.
