The Happy Bear
Smile!
Black bears are incredibly intelligent, curious, and powerful animals. Bears are not mean or malicious; they are very gentle and tolerant animals. Mother bears are affectionate, protective, devoted, strict, sensitive and attentive with their young. Not unlike people, bears can be empathetic, fearful, joyful, playful, social and even altruistic.
Exploring the less visited north rim of Black Canyon of The Gunnison National Park was worth the trip. While driving to a trail head, I pulled over to the side of the road to check my directions. While sitting there, I heard some movement outside of my truck. To my surprise, sitting on the side of the road was a black bear. The bear seemed happy and content eating the berries that were located on the roadside shrubs. I got my camera out and started firing away. Jokingly I said “Smile”, and with that the bear stopped eating, looked up and smiled. Looking directly at the camera, the bear posed better than a lot of humans that I have given the same request to. It was such a fun experience. After shooting some more pictures, I thanked the bear and drove away.
It’s memories like this that make me appreciate the wildlife we share this planet with.
